More on Akshay Kumar:

Akshay, first of all tell us something about your childhood, schooldays etc.?

What do you want to know about my childhood?

What kind of activities were you involved with during your schooldays.

I was never much interested in studies. I was basically more interested in sports. I was very good in sports especially in volleyball & cricket. Those activities in sports kept me fit and that has still come in use today whether in my career or my personal use.

How would you describe yourself as a kid?

I was a naughty boy. Very mischievous.

When did you learn martial arts? Was it in school?

I started doing martial arts when I was in 8th standard. From there I started and I am still doing it today.

During your school days did the thought of becoming an actor occur to you?

No it never occurred to me. I never thought I would become an actor. I remember once when I was in 8th standard I had a little bit of problem with my teacher and was punished in the school for something, which I didn't do. So parents were summoned to my school. My father came to pick me up. He was angry on me but he didn't scold me at that point of time. At home he scolded me and asked me what you wanted to become in life. Since I was very disappointed on the whole episode and angry why was I punished because fortunately at that time it wasn't my mistake. When you are angry you just say anything so I replied I would become a hero. I didn't mean it at all. I didn't know it would become true one day.

How did it become true?

Well I was teaching martial arts in Bombay after learning it from Bangkok. I was working hard and earning Rs. 4,000/= per month. And suddenly I got a modeling offer from one of my student who was a model coordinator. He gave me this offer of doing an ad for a furniture showroom. I didn't know what modeling was I was asked to reach a certain place and I went over there. There was this room with furniture and a camera. In this modeling assignment I was supposed to give some shots with other models in an A/C room, I was given whatever I want. And after 2 1/2 hrs. I received a cheque of Rs. 5,500/= in my hand. Looking at the cheque I said to myself is this fair enough I slog for a month hard teaching martial arts and I earn Rs. 4,000/= and here I relaxed and I am getting more than that in such short time. I am a human being and that made me think a lot. This is fantastic! This line is amazing, what is this modeling I should do it. So I started doing modeling, fashion shows, ramp and after that I came in to films.

So your destiny took you where you are today.

Yes you can say that.

But what developments took place in your life that made you a star? You must have approached lot of producers & directors with your portfolio? Was it very difficult to get the break you were looking for?

Yes I approached them but I would not say it was very difficult to get a break. I got my first film in a month's time since I started approaching people in the film industry. I will not say it was a struggle my struggle was in Bangkok where I was learning martial arts.

What preparations did you undergo to become an actor any acting school or classes? What it takes to be a good actor?

No. Acting is something that comes from within you. I remember it very well when I came into this line I wanted to learn acting. I thought acting must be something like learning cooking so I went to buy a book. I was sure there must be some book I searched all of book vendors at Churchgate in Bombay where they sell these old books. I started searching at 9'o clock in the morning and I found one very good book at 4'o clock. I asked for the price and learnt it was 125 and I had only 110 with me. The first page had a quote "if you want to be a good actor you need to be a good human being". I think that's more than enough to be a good actor.

Which you are?

Laughs!

Akshay tell me something about your debut film?

My first film, which I actually signed, was 'Deedar' with Karisma. My first film that actually started was 'Saughand'. My first scene was with Rakheeji such a senior actress. I remember I was sick that day. I was thinking how will I do all this. My makeup man, fortunately for me he is not just a makeup man he is also a doctor an ayurvedic doctor. He made me comfortable but it was difficult and hard for me to shoot.

What was your experience after 'Khiladi' became a hit since it was your first hit?

It was a great experience. I had never tasted that kind of success. I never knew I will be walking down the street and people will recognise me and call me 'Khiladi'. It is very hard for me to express that feeling.

If you weren't an actor what would you be?

I would have been teaching martial art. I still do teach sometimes.

Your best performance till date?

It is yet to come. Films like 'Sangarsh', 'Janwar', 'Dhadkan', and a Abbas - Mustan's 'Ajnabee'. These four films I am very proud about working in.

How do you keep yourself fit?

Well I train myself every morning for 1 ½ hrs. It is enough for me to keep myself fit. I exercise but I don't do any bodybuilding or weight lifting. I do not say weights are bad but I don't do the same. I don't believe in it, I believe in more flexibility, agile, I can run fast. I love to have an athletic body. I go through my routine exercises every morning and do martial arts, which have helped me, a lot in keeping myself fit.

You did this film called Aflatoon where you had a double role. How was the experience to play 2 different roles in the same film?

It was good.

Do you think audience accepted you in the Negative role you played in this film?

The basic idea is that bad always gets killed that's what happened in 'Aflatoon' and 'Ajnabee' too. Positive character wins and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Well! The script demanded it and I did a decent job of it which people must have liked.

So you will be open to negative roles?

Yes, there is nothing wrong with it. It's just acting in a film. Earlier I would say no to a similar question I would say no negative role but if the negative role too strong and it has reasons towards it why not? What's wrong with it?

What does Akshay do when he is not shooting?

I do a lot of outdoor sports. I still play lot of Volleyball & cricket. I do lot of trekking and rope climbing. I have this small boat which I take sometimes far in the sea in the evenings. I love to do that.

Message to your fans?

I will just say remember one thing believe in God and live peacefully.
