Technorati Top Blogs News

CMSland and here's how we decided to spend it: we packed down a block of fresh soda bread and headed over to Chez Technorati to have a gander at their 100 most linked-to (popular) blogs. With that list in hand we skipped about through viewed source, many emails and some kindly conversation. In the end we had ourselves a nifty little list consisting of website name and the blogging technology.
That Movable Type comes in with a respectable second, and the rest are either custom jobbies or a smattering of other platforms which are, relatively speaking, eating dust. We enclose the full list here for your consideration.

News From Alice

I just got home from work and had a a great time reading all about Houston, seeing the photos, and hearing from Gennifre. THANKS for keeping in touch. What an awesome group of kids! I was glad to hear that there is a variety of age groups because they can learn so much from one another. When I taught in one room schools that was very true whether in academics, We heard from Greta (junior from Bozeman) on Monday before she got on the plane and then on Tuesday I was home cleaning the house and I got 2 very static filled calls, so I knew it was her, and then she got through pretty clearly. She said Antigua was "amazing" and that she was well and school would start Wednesday, and the Earth Lodge was great and the food was awesome. Then she said talk to you in two weeks. I am not worried at all because all the girls are in fantastic hands with strong and good boundaries and an excellent staff.
I hope this finds you al well and that we will get to all meet someday. Fate has it we are connected and for that I am grateful. Be well all and keep in touch. Best. Alice

stockbroker gets 21-month sentence:

Alton to 21 months in federal prison Friday after a prosecutor said the defendant continued to gamble, even after he was fired for stealing other people's money to do so. The government has evidence that Harrison continued to gamble at casinos in St. Louis and St. Charles, Mo., even after he was fired in 2008 by Stifel Nicolaus when they caught him taking clients' money. Brock, 67, had no other retirement fund than what he provided for himself by investing the money he earned. The man he trusted to give him investment advice, Harrison, took money that was not his and gambled it away, Brock said. Brock noted that while he was trying to salt away a little money for retirement, Harrison was leading the good life. Harrison then racked up debts of $150,000.

Rio closed its Sapphire topless pool, managed by a local gentleman's club, after authorities arrested 10 people on suspicion of prostitution and drug crimes. Eight more arrests on similar charges were made at the Hard Rock Hotel's pool club, Rehab. Though the clubs are reliable moneymakers and publicity machines, some have vexed officials with their fraternity-style antics -- including stripping contests, fistfights, and alleged drug use and sexual assaults. Some clubs launched stripping contests; others tried to sneak around no-nudity ordinances by slathering women in body paint. At Prive, patrons were involved in drugs and brawls.

Blue and Gold Club is scrambling to regroup after the nonprofit's longtime treasurer confessed to embezzlement. The Blue and Gold Club is the umbrella organization for many such fundraisers. Students have individual accounts and work various jobs such as at local restaurants, and at Mariner and Seahawk games, as well as selling merchandise for fundraisers and helping run the concession stands at Marauder home games. They don't immediately see any of the fruits of their labor.

More Account Seizures in the United States:

The reasons given for the seizure were that the accounts handled the proceeds of an illegal gambling business and were involved in money laundering transactions. The US 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia opined that the UIGEA... Was not a federal law and could be applied only in those states where Internet gambling is explicitly illegal.

Apparent Suicide:

Rod Blagojevich and died last weekend in an apparent suicide. Kelly's marriage had foundered and he was living apart from his three young daughters. His finances were in ruins and he was already facing prison on a different charge of cheating the Internal Revenue Service. It was a shock to close followers of Chicago politics and the Blagojevich scandal when Kelly died... Kelly wagered millions of dollars with an Illinois bookmaking operation and millions more in Las Vegas casinos, according to court documents. As the losses grew, he illicitly siphoned money from his roofing business to pay debts, then falsified his tax returns. He pleaded guilty in June.

What's Next?:

Where they [banks] are responsible for monitoring and blocking transactions are with debit and credit cards, and that is most likely going to be where you see banks blocking whatever falls into the category of both lawful and unlawful wagering," Only six states have laws against internet gambling... "Part of the problem is there's no definition of what's unlawful, and what's unlawful for one state for one user may not be unlawful in another state under different state laws. IMEGA Chairman Joe Brennan... "That's why the UIGEA is a crappy, insidious law," said Brennan. Lying during this line of questioning could constitute bank fraud, one of the charges listed against Douglas Rennick, who was indicted by the Southern District of New York... Last month. Rennick is accused of providing payment services to online poker players through several shell companies. He believes that it's only a matter of time before states grow hungry for a cut of that booming revenue. As for when and how that situation might come to fruition.

UK Education

Marks In English Exam:
A review has been launched after a top examiner gave a GCSE English candidate marks for writing only a two word expletive on their exam paper.
Assessment and Qualification Alliance's (AQA) chief examiner for GCSE English, gave the pupil two marks out of a possible 27 for writing "fuck off" on the exam paper. The Times Mr Buckfield defended his leniency by saying that the candidate had demonstrated more skills than one who doesn't write anything at all.
Abody representing the exam boards, said that examiners were required to report instances of "inappropriate, offensive or obscene material" in exam scripts.
The example cited was unique in the experience of the senior examiner concerned and was used in a pre-training session to emphasise the importance of adhering to the mark scheme: i.e. if a candidate makes any sort of response to a question then it must be at least given consideration to be awarded a mark. in the light of this incident we will be reviewing our instructions to examiners which will include reiterating the procedure to be followed when encountering obscenities in scripts.
Students Accused Of Degree Fraud:
Phil Willis, Lib Dem MP for Harrogate and Karesborough and Chair of the Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Select Committee.a few days after a university lecturer blew the whistle on her institution's approach to recruiting postgraduates who lack even basic English skills.
BBC to corroborate what the whistleblower had said. Several of the email correspondents claimed that their institutions were happy to turn a blind eye to overseas postgraduates with poor language skills.
Institutions are reluctant to penalise these students, because they recognise that such cutting and pasting may be acceptable in different cultures.
The quality of our higher education product - with several of our universities in the top 100 universities in the world - is dependent on the quality of research and the quality of the students doing the research.
Parents Give Green Lights For Village School:
Villagers of Bolnore in West Sussex are the first parents in England to win the right to open their own school. Due to Government legislation the authority had to put the proposal for the new site out to tender.
We're incredibly excited to be given the opportunity to create a new school that will meet the needs of all our children,  It's about bringing together the best people to ensure that every child can flourish and reach their full potential.
This shows that our policy of increasing choice and diversity for parents and pupils is really working. We want new and distinctive groups to get involved in education where this has the support of the local community.
particularly welcome the involvement of parents and local residents themselves who know the needs of the children and the area. I congratulate the Bolnore School's Group on their success, and wish them all the best for the future.

Encyclopedia of American Journalism

The Encyclopedia of American Journalism. New York: Routledge, 2009. 664 pp. $69.95.
I declined because I was totally intimidated by the thought of deciding what to include and what to leave out. When Margaret Blanchard agreed to undertake the History of the Mass Media in the United States: An Encyclopedia, I was awed by her courage (not the only thing about Peggy that I found awesome), and (full disclosure) I gladly signed on to her editorial board to learn from working with her. When Stephen Vaughn of the University of Wisconsin sent out his appeal for contributors for this........

Bush Putin Agree On Arms Cut Missile

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his counterpart George W Bush agreed to link missile defence systems to cuts in nuclear arsenals in a bid to strike a new strategic pact. GENOA: US-Russia arms talks took an unexpected bound forward yesterday, when Russian President Vladimir Putin and his counterpart George W Bush agreed to link missile defence systems to cuts in nuclear arsenals in a bid to strike.
Group of Eight big power summit in Genoa, Italy, signals a shift in US policy on negotiating mutual arms cuts.
President Bush as well, was the understanding that was reached today between us that offensive arms and the issue of defensive arms will be discussed as a set,’’ Putin told a packed press conference. “The two go hand-in-hand in order to set up a new strategic framework for peace,’’ Bush said.
The two men, speaking after their second meeting in little over a month, said it was too early to say how deep the cuts in intercontinental ballistic missiles would go. Bush said he and Putin wanted to “change the mindset of the world’’ and create a strategic security framework for the 21st century freed from the shackles of the Cold War.

Cold War is forever over, and the vestiges of the Cold War that locked us both into a hostile situation, are over,’’ said Bush. The US leader said his top national security advisor Condoleezza Rice would shortly visit Moscow to thrash out with top Russian officials a timetable for talks between defe-nce and foreign ministers.
US has about 7,000 deployed stra-tegic nuclear warheads, while Russia has roughly 6,000. closing out a summit overshadowed by violent street protests, vowed to wage a united attack on global poverty and disease. They failed, however, to resolve a sharp dispute over global warming.
The leaders followed up on a Friday pledge of a new Aids fund with promises to help in other areas as well, from education to expanding debt relief to launching a new global trade round.
Bush was less successful in reaching any compromise. European leaders lobbied hard behind the scenes, but were unable to get the president to reverse his rejection of the 1997 Kyoto accord.
Which brought out up to 100,000 marchers, most of them peaceful, left nearly 500 people injured and claimed the first fatality. Mindful of that, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien announced that next year’s summit on June 26-28 in Canada will be held away from heavily populated cities in Kananaskis.

Pope To Shed Light On Vatican's Murky Banking

The Vatican has created a financial watchdog agency and issued new laws to fight money laundering and terrorist financing in a major effort to shed its image as a tax haven that for years has been mired in secrecy.
Which go into effect April 1, were passed Thursday as the Vatican’s own bank remains implicated in a money-laundering investigation that resulted in 23 million euros ($31 million) being seized.
Religious Works, or IOR, is one of several Vatican offices that are covered by the new financial transparency rules, which were adopted primarily to comply with European Union norms. The Vatican city state’s governing administration, the department that controls the pope’s vast real estate holdings, even the Holy See’s pharmacy.
But it also manages ATMs inside Vatican City and the pension system for the Vatican’s thousands of employees. But bank officials say there are some 40,000-45,000 among religious congregations, clergy, Vatican officials and lay people with Vatican connections.said he was issuing the decrees because he wanted the Vatican to join other countries that have cracked down on legal loopholes that have allowed criminals to exploit the financial sector.
independent Vatican compliance agency, the Financial Information Authority, tasked with ensuring all Vatican financial transactions comply with the new laws. The watchdog will also share information with international financial organizations.can be passed onto prosecutors at the Vatican tribunal. Its work is conducted in secret  - but the norms stress that secrecy won’t get in the way of cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
Vatican to train anyone for terrorist acts or to provide them with chemical or bacteriological weapons.  for prostitution or other reasons, or who traffic in human organs now face eight to 20 years behind bars. It’s now even a crime to pollute the Vatican’s soil, water or atmosphere: those guilty face up to a year in prison.
EU norms on money-laundering and terror financing and shed its reputation in the financial world as a secrecy-obsessed tax haven whose bank was implicated in one of Italy’s largest fraud cases.
Rome prosecutors on Sept. 21 seized ¤23 million and placed Gotti Tedeschi and his deputy under investigation, alleging the bank broke the law by trying to transfer money without identifying the sender or recipient. But Rome courts have twice refused to release the money, with a judge earlier this month saying nothing had changed in the way the Vatican guards the identity of its clients.has said he has been working since then to get the Vatican to come into compliance with the norms of the Financial Action Task Force  - the Paris-based policymaking body that helps develop anti-money laundering and anti-terror financing legislation.

Pakistan: Punjab governor Salman Tasser killed by his guard

ISLAMABAD: The governor of Pakistan's powerful Punjab province was shot dead Tuesday by one of his guards in the Pakistani capital, police said.

The killing was the most high-profile assassination of a political figure in Pakistan since the slaying of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December of 2007.

Punjab Gov. Salman Taseer was a high-profile member of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and a close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's widower.

Taseer was vocal on a range of subjects, including speaking out against the country's blasphemy law in recent days. Islamists in Pakistan have defended the controversial law and slammed those who oppose it.

Police official Mohammad Iftikhar said Taseer was gunned down by one of his own elite security force protectors after he reached Khosar Market, a shopping center in Islamabad popular with Westerners and wealthy Pakistanis. The suspected assailant was taken into custody, Iftikhar said.

Five other people were wounded as other security personnel responded to the attack.

Another police official, Hasan Iqbal, said a pair of witnesses told the police that as the governor was leaving his vehicle, a man from his security squad fired two shots at him. Taseer then fell, while other police officials fired on the attacker.

It was unclear if the attacker was wounded.

Average Packaged as Quality

I hadn’t been shopping, and so for the first time in my entire life I ordered in pizza. It was the most disgusting ‘food’ I’d had in a long, long time – it was also over double the cost of a really good pizza in a restaurant! What on earth is going on?but I can’t figure out why? Have the British become used to such dire standards that they now accept such sub-standard food products? Sadly, I think the answer is ‘yes’. And this march towards mediocrity is being led by the big supermarkets. How so?
All of the big retailers (with the honourable exception of Waitrose, which really does try to keep standards up) have introduced various versions of the ‘Finest’. Now, have you ever thought about this in any detail? Because the fact is that these products, without exception, are nothing less than what you should expect as a bare minimum as regards taste, texture and nutrition. Consequently, the consumer now pays top dollar for a standard product and feels quite happy about it.
This will, of course, probably not happen today, but it will, just as soon as the current obesity problem becomes endemic: probably next Tuesday then.

Food for thought

New York’s iconic Gourmet Mag in November. This month we welcome Britain’s Fire & Knives, edited by Tim Hayward. The quarterly is a refreshing take on old-fashioned food mags with long, intelligent articles. Chapters include cooking with tobacco and Elizabeth David’s unpublished opinion of Fanny Cradock. A decent Christmas pressie?
It may sound like a Saatchi interactive installation but it’s creative duo Sam Bompas and Harry Parr’s new venture. Working with Courvoisier, they’ve filled a room with 4,000 litres of a cocktail made with the Cognac. Bompas says: ‘You can row across the punch then drink it (25,000 servings) and we’re building remote control garnishes.

Health Tips

health image Health Training & Learning Center By Bella Fontana SpaThey really want to get into shape, and they know for sure that this year will be different. They sign up for a year membership and start their new goal with clear focus and determination, Mostly because they quit when they realize how much work goes into getting back into the shape they once had. The fact of the matter is that it really is not as difficult as they think. They are just focusing on one aspect of overall wellness and burning themselves out on it.
There is much more to being healthy than showing up to the gym every day. In fact, exercise is only one-eighth of the total equation. If you really want to achieve personal wellness in 2009, forget the gym and focus instead on improving the following 8 categories of health.
Health Tips 1:
You already know the main reason you gained weight. Too many trips through the McDonalds drive-thru, late night snacking on junk food and poor dinner choices. You do not have to eat a diet of bland salads and yogurt, but you do need to limit the amount of trigger foods that you caused your weight gain. Replace your current American diet of high sugar.
Health Tips 2:
Now that our soils are more depleted of minerals than ever, and our farm animals are not fed properly, living a healthy lifestyle requires nutritional supplementation. I lost 70 pounds in 4 months and kept it off for over 15 years simply by drinking a soy-based protein shake for breakfast every morning and taking a few targeted vitamins.
Health Tips 3:
Ice Skating? Playing the guitar? Whatever it is, you must find time for it on a weekly basis (if not daily) in order to maintain good mental stability. Your activities and hobbies should not include junk food or alcohol. Going to the movies is watching the movie, not eating a tub of fatty buttered popcorn.
Health Tips 4:
People do not consider drinking as important as eating and it is! You should not be drinking soda or processed juices every day. Why? Because they deplete your body of vitamins and minerals while loading you up on sugar. Alcohol is even worse. Do yourself a favor and keep a water bottle with you at all times. Drink, drink, drink.
Health Tips 5:
This is just as important to living a healthy lifestyle as eating and drinking properly. Too much stress can cause major problems for your body. You only live once, so do not allow other people and events to get you so bothered and worried that you cannot live the lifestyle you deserve for yourself.
Health Tips 6:
But unhealthy habits are not just about food, are they? Smoking and the use of other drugs, prescription or not, is probably the worst thing a person can do to their body. This is the only one you have! Take care of it. Alcohol is OK on occasion but not recommended on a daily basis to anyone interested in living a healthy lifestyle.
Health Tips 7:
Most everyone has lost weight at one point in their life. Keeping that weight off is the obstacle that most people can not overcome. Think about it logically. If you gained weight by eating twinkies, then lost weight when you stopped eating twinkies, do not go back to eating twinkies.
Health Tips 8:
I am living proof because my severe asthma prohibited me from doing it. The reason I can exercise now is because I got my body healthy through focusing on the other 7 categories. Once I began exercising, it only accelerated my weight loss and now helps to keep me lean. The key to exercise is not quantity but quality. A little bit every day will give you the best health benefits overall.
Health Tips 9:
The 8 health tips to kick off the new year for a new you. Focus on improving each of these simultaneously as your one and only New Years Resolution and you will be on a successful path to overall wellness. Weight loss and poor health can be things of the past if you are just willing to make small changes on a daily basis.

Health News

child obesity Health News: Increased Rate Of Child Obesity
I was reminded of this when I read recently of a doctor’s advice to someone who was suffering from sciatica. Having personally experienced sciatica, it’s a condition I would not recommend to anyone who wishes to walk, sit, laugh, sleep, or to just simply pull up your trousers. It’s a bit like a dentist drilling your teeth without an anaesthetic, but it affects your whole leg. In other words the pain is consuming, exhausting and without respite. Clinical studies do show that in the majority of cases the pain will eventually subside and surgery may not be necessary, but in the meantime the patient has to deal with the pain or deal with the medication required to dull the pain. Remember, pain-killers are not selective to the area affected.
I suggest that you have to treat this sort of pain fairly aggressively as acute severe pain is relatively easier to treat than chronic severe pain. In the early stages of an injury or insult to an area of the body, most of the pathological processes are happening at the site of the injury or insult. Throughout time the brain begins to modulate this pain and so no only do you have the injured area to deal with, but you also have complex neural pathways within the brain to deal with as well. This often means a far more complex management plan and a far more protracted recovery time. Specialists are very skilled at dealing with these issues but they do rely heavily on the stories their patients give them. That means being honest in answering their questions and not being heroic with a grin and bear it grimace.

21ST CENTURY STANDARDIZED HERBAL EXTRACT CAPSULES, MILK THISTLE EXTRACT

Over the years I have frequently heard people say that they would not have the flu vaccine because either they never get the flu or that they had it last week for a couple of days and then it was all over! Influenza is a serious debilitating disease that will usually last from 10 days to two weeks and often leave you flat on your back exhausted. It’s not a happy 10 days either as patients do not have the energy to read a magazine or even watch a DVD. You will literally feel ancient with every movement being a real challenge and that doesn’t include the aching all over or the fevers and sleepless nights. The influenza virus is also extremely contagious and most people are unaware that if you spread it to someone who is more frail than yourself.including children, those employed and unemployed, the elderly and the infirm, to reduce the chance of an epidemic occurring. Recent research has also showed that vaccinating pregnant women in the last trimester of their pregnancy will help protect their new born infants born during the ‘flu season.

But we can’t leave the doctors to take all the initiatives. As patients we need to be good listeners in our approach to health by heeding all the great health messages that keep being given to us about vaccinations, smoking, alcohol, exercise and healthy eating. We also need to be good communicators and tell our doctors how we are feeling with conditions such as pain. If the team treating you doesn’t have the best information.
